4 Tips to Protect Your Smile After a Root Canal

4 Tips to Protect Your Smile After a Root Canal

If you’ve recently had a root canal to save a damaged tooth, Brian Goodman, DDS, and Tanner Goodman, DMD, have some essential aftercare tips to help protect your oral health and keep your smile bright.

A root canal is a common and effective procedure we perform here at Goodman Dental Center, but maintaining its success requires care. Here are four practices to help ensure long-lasting results and optimal oral health:

1. Follow your dental professional’s instructions

Dr. Brian Goodman or Dr. Tanner Goodman provides specific aftercare guidelines, which may include instructions on medication, certain foods to avoid, and when to schedule follow-up appointments.

Following their instructions can prevent complications and ensure your tooth heals properly. If they prescribe antibiotics or pain relievers, take them as directed to prevent infection and manage discomfort.

2. Avoid hard or chewy foods

After a root canal, your tooth may be more vulnerable until we can place a permanent crown. Hard, chewy, or sticky foods can stress the treated tooth, potentially causing damage. Opt for soft foods like soups, mashed potatoes, or yogurt during the initial recovery period.

Once the dental team gives you the green light, you can gradually reintroduce your usual diet.

3. Maintain excellent oral hygiene

Good oral hygiene is vital to the success of your root canal treatment and the overall health of your teeth. Brush twice daily using a fluoride toothpaste, and floss gently around the treated tooth to remove plaque.

Consider using an antiseptic mouthwash to reduce bacteria and keep your mouth fresh. You can prevent further decay when you maintain a clean environment in your mouth.

4. Get a crown or permanent restoration

A root canal-treated tooth is often weaker than a healthy tooth, making it more prone to fractures, so you may need a crown or another type of permanent restoration to protect your tooth and restore its functionality. Don’t delay this step, as it’s critical for long-term success.

Bonus tip: Schedule regular check-ups

At Goodman Dental Center, we recommend routine dental check-ups as part of your post-root canal care. During these visits, we monitor your treated tooth and ensure it remains healthy and secure.

Regular professional dental cleanings and exams also help prevent issues with other teeth, keeping your smile in top shape.

If you have any concerns or experience unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact our team at our Queen Creek, Arizona, office. You can also schedule an appointment for a routine oral health exam.
