Why Am I So Scared of the Dentist?
Around 20% of people put off going to the dentist until they absolutely must because it makes them so anxious. Between 2-8% of people have a serious dental phobia and don’t go to the dentist at all.
At Goodman Dental Center, our staff and providers Dr. Brian Goodman and Dr. Tanner Goodman, take extra care and time to talk with patients who have dental anxiety. We understand that it can be a barrier to appropriate dental care and that your oral health can suffer.
In this blog, we offer some actionable tips to help you feel less fearful when it’s time to have routine dental care! We also offer sedation dentistry which may be the best approach for you.
Defeating dental anxiety
As unpleasant as it may seem, you do need to go to the dentist regularly. You can expect that our team does everything within our power to make you feel at ease, but we won’t be able to completely take away your fear.
Even if you find it nerve-wracking, it’s important to have regular dental care so that you maintain excellent dental health. We work hard to help you feel comfortable, and there are some things you can do as well.
Here are seven tips for what you can do to help your experience be the best it can be.
1. Bring company
It may be a surprising idea, but bringing along a friend or family member to your appointment can be really helpful in easing your anxiety. Just having someone you trust in the room is calming, and we don’t mind if you bring a guest.
2. Distract yourself
Listening to an audiobook or podcast can be a great way to distract your mind from what’s going on. If you’re not sure what might be interesting to listen to, maybe spend some time exploring what you like before your appointment.
3. Practice breathing
You already know how to breathe, of course, but learning a few breathing techniques can help. You can practice breathing exercises anywhere, like our waiting room or even in the dentist’s chair, and focusing on your breath can be very calming.
4. Tell us about your anxiety
When we understand the source of your anxiety, whether it’s due to a bad experience with the dentist, or something else, we can suggest things that may help. Plus, if we know you’re anxious during your appointment, we can make sure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout your appointment.
5. Get answers
We want you to enjoy good oral health, but we also want you to feel at ease when you’re here. One thing that many patients who have dental anxiety share is a need for information. Ask us as many questions as you want about what we’re going to do or are doing. We love our work and are always happy to discuss our work.
6. Calm down with some comedy
Everyone’s heard the old adage, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Try listening to your favorite comedian on your drive to our office. It may help you relax before you arrive.
7. Consider therapy
Seeking out therapy because you don't like going to the dentist seems extreme, but your dental health is an integral part of your overall health, and if you’re not getting regular care, your health may suffer from it. Therapy could help you better understand your anxiety and give you additional tools for dealing with it.
We are here for you
